There will never be a perfect time.

There will always be another busy season, another activity on the calendar, another reason to wait until the kids are a little older, a little more cooperative, or life feels a little less chaotic. But meanwhile, they're growing. Their little personalities are changing. The way they laugh, the way they hold your hand, the things they say, and the way they fit into your arms are all changing right in front of you.

I want you to remember what being a family feels like right now.

That is at the heart of why I love family photography—and why I love being a family photographer in Southern Oregon.

You Don't Have to Wait for the Perfect Time

As a mom, I understand the temptation to wait.

Maybe you want to lose a few pounds first. Maybe your toddler isn't exactly known for cooperating. Maybe your house is a mess, your schedule is packed, or your kids are going through a particularly wild stage. Believe me, I know the to-do list is long and there is never enough time!

Maybe you think you'll take family photos when life settles down.

But life doesn't always settle down. And while we're waiting for the perfect time, our children are growing. I see it every time a family returns for Family Photos year after year. Their kids change right before my eyes!

The toddler who wants to be carried everywhere will eventually want to walk on their own. The little boy who tells you every detail of his day will eventually become a little more independent. The girl who still reaches for your hand will someday be much too grown-up to hold it quite so often. Your wild and crazy youngest will find new and different ways to be herself. Your little guy who loves toy airplanes will no longer need a toy to hold during our time together.

These are the things I want you to remember.

Not just what your family looked like, but what it felt like to be your family in this particular season.

What Does Your Family Feel Like Right Now?

This is one of the questions I think about when I photograph families.

What makes your family your family?

Maybe your kids spend the entire session chasing each other.

Maybe your family ends the session getting wet in the river.

Maybe your toddler wants to be attached to Mom the entire time.

Maybe Dad is the one who can always make everyone laugh.

Those things aren't obstacles to beautiful family photos.

They're the story.

My goal isn't to make your family look like someone else's family. Your family won't remember the perfect pose, but they will remember the personalities, relationships, quirks, laughter, affection, and connection that make your family uniquely yours. (read more on this topic here)

Family Photography Doesn't Have to Feel Like a Chore

I know that getting everyone dressed, fed, out the door, and ready for family photos can feel like a monumental accomplishment all by itself.

The last thing I want is for the actual photography session to feel like another item on your already-too-long to-do list.

That's why my family sessions are relaxed and flexible.

We play.

We move.

We run.

We laugh.

We tell jokes.

We play games.

We take breaks.

And sometimes...we splash in the river!

And if something isn't working, we change course.

I don't expect young children to stand perfectly still and smile on command for an hour. Instead, I give your family gentle direction while leaving plenty of room for genuine interaction and the unexpected moments that often become the photographs you love most.

For families with toddlers or children who aren't interested in following directions, we can let them explore and capture them naturally. Sometimes the best photographs happen when they're completely unaware that I'm taking their picture.

We Get the Big Group Photos First

One of the ways I help family sessions feel easier is by thinking ahead about what your children need.

If we have little ones who are likely to need a break, we'll often start with the larger group photographs while everyone is fresh.

Then we can move into smaller combinations, individual portraits, sibling photos, parent-and-child photos, and plenty of candid moments.

That means if your toddler eventually decides they've had enough of pictures, we've already captured the important everyone-together photographs.

And if your child needs a snack, a cuddle, a change of pace, or a few minutes to run around?

That's okay.

We take the break.

Your family doesn't have to perform for me.

I Want You to Be Present, Too

This is actually one of the biggest reasons I value hiring a professional family photographer myself.

When someone else is photographing my family, I don't have to think about the camera.

I don't have to wonder whether I'm standing in the right place, whether the light is beautiful, whether everyone is in focus, or whether I'm capturing the moment from the right angle.

I can simply be Mom.

I can laugh with my son.

I can enjoy the way he interacts with the people he loves.

I can be fully present in the moment and trust that someone else is paying attention to all of those little details.

And then, when I receive the finished photographs, I'm often completely wowed by what was captured.

There are moments I didn't even realize were happening.

Expressions I didn't see.

Little details I didn't know I would want to remember.

And suddenly I have a beautiful collection of photographs that allows me to go back to that season of life.

That is what I want for you.

I want you to be able to enjoy your family while I document them.

Don't Wait Until They're Older

I hear so many parents say:

"We'll do photos when they're a little older."

"We'll wait until the toddler stage is over."

"We'll schedule when life isn't so busy."

"We'll do it when everyone can cooperate."

But meanwhile, they're growing.

The little details you think you'll always remember become surprisingly difficult to recall.

What did your three-year-old's laugh sound like?

How did your son tuck his hand into yours?

What did your daughter do when Dad made her laugh?

How did your children interact with each other?

What did it feel like to have everyone piled together on the couch?

These are the things photographs can preserve.

Not just the perfectly posed smiles, but the feeling of this season.

I Want You to Remember This

Years from now, I don't want you to look at your family photographs and simply remember what everyone was wearing.

I want you to remember the way your children felt in your arms.

The sound of their laughter.

The way your daughter looked at you.

The way your son grabbed your hand.

The little personalities that were already beginning to emerge.

The way your spouse looked at you while you were loving on your kids.

The feeling of being together.

I want you to remember what being a family felt like right now.

Because this season is fleeting.

The days may feel long sometimes. The laundry may be endless. Someone may refuse to put their shoes on five minutes before you need to leave. Someone will probably have a meltdown at some point during the session. And that's okay.

This is your life.

This is your family.

And someday, you may look back and realize that these ordinary, chaotic, beautiful days were some of the most precious days of your life. (Find out here why I don't worry if there are meltdowns during our time together.)

So don't wait for perfect.

Don't wait until the kids are older.

Don't wait until life slows down.

Let's slow down long enough to see the beauty that's already here.

I'll take care of the photographs.

You just be present with the people you love.
