Something Comfortable!
You look your best when you are comfortable! It is important to keep this in mind when you are choosing outfits for everyone in your family. Make sure the wardrobe you choose is flattering and easy to move around in. Lifestyle sessions involve a lot of action and movement, so avoid any restrictive, tight clothing that you can't be active in. Wear comfortable shoes. Or, if you have an indoor session, have the entire family go barefoot! Dress for the weather. Layers are your best friend during those colder months.
True to Your Style
These are your pictures. Be true to your own unique style instead of trying to copy anyone else. While there are certain things that look best in pictures, keep in mind that they are guidelines. Use them to choose the best outfit for pictures from amongst your own personal favorites.
Note: If anyone in your family enjoys wearing a dress, clothing that flows in the wind can look amazing in pictures!
Colors that POP!
The colors you choose to wear determine how much your photos will POP! Lighter colors encourage the focus to be on the emotion and connection that you share as a family. Warmer colors look great against an outdoor environment that is loaded with blues, greens, browns, and grey. Limit the darker colors to get light and airy photos. Use pops of color to balance the overall look of the family altogether. Avoid bright neon colors or shirts with lettering that looks out of place.
Balance Textures
Use texture to help balance the overall look. Knits, denim, flowy dresses, buttons, lace, sheer, suede, khaki. There are endless options to choose from for texture! Consider the time of year, and then have fun choosing different textures to add to the style of your family photo session.
Complimentary Prints
You can pair multiple prints together if the patterns are tiny. Mix in some solids to balance it out, and you will have a beautiful family wardrobe! If the print is a big pattern, avoid mixing in more than one, as it will look too busy.
Hair and Accessories
Long hair looks great down! Scarves and hats that don't block the light on your face can be a great accessory to add some variety. Glasses can be highly reflective in certain lighting situations. Cell phones, keys, and hair ties should all be removed before the session.
Dressing your entire family for a photo session might seem a bit daunting. But if you apply these tips, and use a little creativity, it won't be long before you have a wardrobe that will land you one step closer to memories that last a lifetime. Your family photos can tell your story and show you how beautiful your family really is!
I would love to help you capture the moments for your next family photo session!
